You can hold up to four Advanced Learner Loans at once, and repayments only start when your earnings exceed the threshold (currently £25,000).
No credit checks — your previous credit history won’t affect your application.
If you never earn above the repayment threshold, you won’t have to repay the loan.
Loans are written off after 40 years.
How repayments work
Repayments are income-contingent, so amounts adjust automatically as your earnings change.
You only repay once your income is above the set threshold. Repayments are calculated as a percentage of the income above that threshold, ensuring payments remain manageable.
Example (illustrative): If your monthly pre-tax pay is £2,500 and the monthly threshold is £2,274, you’d repay 9% of £226 — about £20 that month. If your income falls, repayments reduce automatically.
